Congratulations Class of ’10!

As of May 18, 2010, the Class of 2010 has submitted 208 college applications and received 145 offers of admission and over $1.7 million in scholarship and financial aid awards. View the College Acceptances page to see the list of schools that have accepted our students. Way to go, Seniors!

College Search Tools

There are many tools to help you in your college search: rankings, guidebooks, websites such as College Board, college catalogs and the resources in the College Advisor’s office. Here is another website which has just come to my attention: WhatWillTheyLearn.com. This site rates colleges on whether the institution requires seven core subjects: Composition, Literature, Foreign Language, U.S. Government or History, Economics, Mathematics, or Natural or Physical Science. The grade is based on a detailed review of the latest online course catalogs. Although the list of colleges is extensive, it is not comprehensive. It does, however, provide a useful comparison of what colleges expect their students to have mastered upon graduation.

Scholarships

College scholarships generally fall into two categories: college-based and general.  College-based scholarships are unique to an individual college and are generally merit based. While some college-based scholarships will require a separate application, most are awarded based on your application for admission.  General scholarships are offered by corporations, banks, community groups, government organizations, etc., and are not college-specific.

Websites such as www.fastweb.com  and www.collegeboard.com  provide information on scholarships. Check out college websites to find out what scholarships they offer.  Thomas Jefferson High School has an excellent website www.tjhsst.edu/supportingtj/careercenter with extensive scholarship and college search information. We are grateful for their permission to include a link to their site from our page. Scholarships not appearing on TJ’s website will be listed below:

Christian Support On Secular Campuses

One of the key considerations when choosing a college is finding both a church home and Christian support on campus.  The website www.LiveAbove.com was developed by campus ministries to help students entering college get plugged into a Christian community even before they arrive on campus.  Also check the websites of individual organizations such as Campus Crusade and Reformed University Fellowship for a listing of schools where they have a presence.

Seniors Playing Division I Or II Sports

All seniors interested in playing Division I or II sports in college must be certified by the Eligibility Center.  Please see Mrs. Gaffin for more details.

College Fair Tips

Trinity students have the wonderful advantage of living in an area that attracts large college fairs.  Several of those fairs are listed on the calendar on the right for your convenience.  All juniors and seniors have also received a handout with the same information.

College fairs provide a marvelous opportunity to gather information about schools and ask questions of college reps.  The sheer number of schools represented, however, can seem overwhelming.  So how can you get the most out of a college fair?  Here are some helpful hints:
  • Make a list of the colleges you're particularly interested in before you attend, and search out those colleges first.
  • Pick up the brochures and information that the reps have available.
  • Ask about specific courses of study you're interested in e.g. engineering, elementary education, music, etc.
  • Ask about scholarships--some scholarship programs may require a separate application.
  • Inquire about acceptance criteria: Are they looking for strong SAT's, a broad extra-curricular resume? What is the median range of SAT scores among the freshman class?
  • Pick up a course catalog if they have one available or ask to have one mailed to you.  The course catalog will give you a good sense of the depth and breadth of the programs available (not all engineering programs are created equal!)
  • Ask about campus life, dorm living (co-ed? are freshmen required to live on-campus?), student organizations (Campus Crusade, Navigators, Young Life), churches in the vicinity.
  • Ask any question you may have about the school.  If the reps don't have the answer, they can let you know where to find it.
  • Have fun!

The Personal Resume or Brag Sheet

The myriad of college brochures you are already or will soon be receiving would lead you to believe that the college admission process is all about facts and figures and scores.  Not true!  Colleges are looking for living breathing human beings with personalities, passions, and character.  As you look ahead to the college application process, remember that it is very much the practice of selling yourself to the college admission counselors.  There are a few ways you can make yourself  "come alive" to the counselors.  One of them is through the brag sheet.   Click on the links for instructions on how to get started and for a brag sheet template (Excel document).
