Christians and the Silent War on the Unborn

As Christians, it can be all too easy to settle into a quiet, comfortable life, never ruffling any feathers or challenging the status quo. We can let our guard down in our Christian circles and never feel a need to venture out into uncharted territory where we may have to actually take a stand for something. We almost forget that there is a great war afoot. We forget that at this very moment, innocent lives are being taken at the hands of a dark and terrible enemy.

I am speaking, of course, about the war on the unborn.

The war wages ever on, unrelenting, claiming more innocent lives by the hour. It’s a war that is fought quietly, in the dark. It goes unnoticed by many, silently consuming lives behind closed doors, dressed up in medical jargon and shielded by shallow, political platitudes. Every day while we go about our lives, innocent children are being slaughtered at abortion clinics across the country. Yet many of us remain silent. Just to help you get a sense of the vast number of lives being lost to the atrocity of abortion, listen to this 2-minute radio clip, which, at least for me, was a jarring wake-up call.

In the U.S. alone, over 50 million abortions have been performed since 1973 (when the Supreme Court ruled abortion legal in Roe v. Wade). As if it isn’t bad enough that innocent babies are the target of this mass genocide, it’s often babies of color and babies with Down syndrome who are the most at risk. According to The Life Institute, over 13 million of those 50 million abortions targeted Black babies. That means more African American babies have been killed by abortions since 1973 than the total number of African American deaths from AIDS, violent crimes, accidents, cancer, and heart disease combined. Abortion has reduced the Black population in the U.S. by over 25 percent. Sadly, the risk is even greater for babies with Down syndrome, as over 90 percent of Down syndrome babies are aborted. While heartbreaking, these numbers are sadly not surprising; it’s a well-known fact that Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger was a eugenicist who wanted to “weed out the unfit and prevent the birth of defectives.” Such blatant, systemic racism and ableism should shock and sicken everyone, especially Christians.

Not only does abortion end the lives of the most vulnerable, it harms mothers too. Mothers who undergo abortions often suffer both physical and psychological complications in the process. Furthermore, abortion does not truly address the underlying challenges that these women face, which often include trauma and financial instability. If we really want to love and care for these women, we should surround them with love, support, and resources, rather than instilling in them the belief that they can’t be successful or happy if they give birth. Abortion can actually be used as an excuse to avoid helping these women.

For the sake of babies and women across the country, it’s time we stop turning a blind eye to injustice. If you are not already involved in the fight for life, here are some ways you can get involved:

1. Start by learning:

  • Mind and Heart Ep 5 | Fighting for Life with Alyssa Thoburn: In this episode of Mind and Heart, 2021 Trinity alumna Alyssa Thoburn discusses her involvement in the pro-life cause, debunks a popular pro-choice argument, and offers resources for people interested in joining the cause. Listen and be inspired!
  • Testimony of Former Abortion Provider: Learn exactly what happens during an abortion procedure from this former abortionist-turned-pro-life advocate.
  • Relatable with Allie Beth Stuckey: Episode 141 | Abortion: In this episode of her podcast “Relatable,” podcast host, speaker, author, and conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey explains what abortion is and offers pro-life rebuttals to popular pro-choice arguments.
  • Unplanned: This film is based on the true story of Abby Johnson, a former abortionist who was confronted with the truth of what she was doing and turned her life around to be an unstoppable force for the pro-life cause.
  • Scripture: The Bible has a lot to say about pre-born life, and as Christians, we should care deeply about what the Lord has revealed to us on this important topic. Click the link to see a list of verses that speak to life in the womb.

2. Volunteer with a prolife organization:

There are so many organizations dedicated to ending abortion. Here are a few you can volunteer with:

3. Donate to pro-life organizations:

4. Donate to Let Them Live:

73 percent of women who get abortions choose to do so because of financial instability. Thankfully, this organization works to provide needed resources to these mothers so that they feel equipped to care for their children. As pro-lifers, we want to love and support both babies and their mothers!

5. Shop at companies with pro-life values:

When we spend money at certain companies or organizations, those companies and organizations then use that money to support causes that align with their brand. So why not spend our money at companies that support causes that align with our values? One such company is the online boutique, COL1972. When you shop here, you know your money is ultimately going toward the pro-life cause.
