James Whitaker, Class of 2018
Elzinga Residential Scholar
James is living in the Center for Christian Studies at the University of Virginia as an Elzinga Residential Scholar. The Elzinga Residential Scholars Program has three components – community, consistency, and character formation— rooted in the gospel, which appealed to James because of his time at Trinity. “My thoughtful Christian friends and teachers helped me to enjoy Christian study and to be more intentional about how my faith relates to my studies and practices.” Elzinga Scholars live at the Center for Christian Studies (fondly known as the Stud) and commit to Christian study and intentional fellowship with one another. James is majoring in Classics, specializing in Latin, and is also studying Medieval and Renaissance English. In addition to his commitments at the Stud and his academics, James also sings in two UVA choirs, the University Singers and the Chamber Singers, the octet at his church, and a men’s quartet which he started. “I ended up here very much because of Trinity. Mrs. Koth got me started into the world of choral music and good friends from Trinity encouraged me to try living at the Study Center.” Trinity classmate Daniel Patel is also an Elzinga Residential Scholar this year.
